Quick answers about changing an LLC's name
- How do I change my New York LLC's name?
- By filing a Certificate of Amendment to the Articles of Organization with the Department of State (LLC Law §211, form DOS-1358-f). The current name and the date the Articles were filed must match the state's records exactly.
- How much does it cost?
- The state's fee is $60. With us it is $149 all in: our $89 fee plus the $60, which we pay to the state for you.
- What can the new name be?
- It has to end with "Limited Liability Company", "LLC" or "L.L.C.", and it can't already be taken on the state's register. We check it when you order and again the day we file.
- Do I need a name change or a DBA?
- A name change replaces the LLC's legal name. A DBA keeps the legal name and adds a second name to trade under, for $99 all in. If you only want a brand name, a DBA is enough.
- My LLC was formed in another state. Can you change its name?
- Not with this service. An out-of-state LLC changes its name in its home state first, and then updates New York.
